On Sat 25th July, as part of the BFI Britain on Film season, we bring an outdoor screening of Made In Dagenham to… Dagenham!

Made In Dagenham depicts a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement, which began in the perhaps unlikely surroundings of the Ford car plant in Dagenham.

In 1968, female workers, finally unable to put up with the environment of the time in which women were not in some ways considered equal to men, and so not entitled to equal pay, staged a strike at the plant. Feisty, mouthy and ultimately fuelled by a just indignation, these women won not only the battle at the Ford car plant, but a battle on behalf of all women in the UK, when their campaign lead to the Equal Pay Act of 1970, entitling all women the right to equal pay.

It’s the story of a major part of British history, and simultaneously a funny, touching and rabble-rousingly entertaining film.

Come down and see it on a giant inflatable screen in Parsloes Park, Dagenham – just down the road from where the events took place 50 years ago – as part of Barking & Dagenham’s huge One Borough Community Day festival. Screening starts at 8pm and is FREE!

We’re also very please to be presenting, thanks to Film London and London Screen Archives, a programme of archive film from Barking and Dagenham depicting the history of the area on film. From teeming markets, to family celebrations, to a day of leisure 1950s-style, it’s a fascinating glipse into the past of the neighbourhood and – who knows – you might catch a glimpse of the road you live on, or grandma in her prime.
