Sunday at Shambala: Myths, Fairytales and Odysseys
One week on from the organised mayhem that was Shambala Festival, and we have now recovered enough to report on the rest of our time there.
Following on from our fired-up day of revolution and politics in film, where we showcased such films as Fantastic Mr Fox, Chico and Rita, Network and Just Do It (welcoming producer Lauren Simpson for a Q&A post-film), Sunday was a little less down to earth with our ‘Myths, Fairytales and Odysseys’ programme. For this we presented a special concoction cinematic delights, including cult films Indiana Jones, 2011: Space Odyssey and Princess Bride, plus some out-of-this-world live film scores and expanded cinema.
7-Inch Cinema kick started the day with a delightful programme of films and animations for children, following their weird and wonderful montage of moving image the night before. We also presented our Making Tracks Open Mic showcase with Whirlygig Cinema, featuring brand new unheard film scores played by festival-goers themselves. These were surprisingly excellent and hats off to those that got involved. Then later on The Cabinet of Living Cinema blew everyone out of the water with their Garden of Living Cinema live film score programme.
Laura and Matt from Curzon continued to enlighten the crowds with their Len Lye-inspired Drawing on Film workshop, and premiered the completed amalgamation of everyone’s work in a special screening accompanied by live music from The Cabinet. We were also proud to show the premiere of Teen Media Team’s film of the festival immediately before this, and hosted a mini mock-up Oscars to celebrate all talent involved.
